In a lunar eclipse, the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon, so the Earth's shadow falls on the moon. The red colour is caused because from the moon's point of view, the sun is directly behind the Earth. This means that any light reaching the moon has travelled through the Earth's atmosphere, which tints it red (it's this same effect that makes a sunset red).

I've always loved your astronomical photos. The moon looks tangible in this one, like a peach that you could pluck out of the sky. Great composition too.
